As of August 2014, the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC) says the most frequent causes of spinal cord injury are vehicle crashes, including crashes involving cars, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, all-terrain vehicles, aircraft, boats and snowmobiles. The average age at injury has increased from 29 years during 1970s to 42 years since 2010.
Approximately 79% of spinal cord injuries occur among males. A high spinal cord injury causes varying degrees of paralysis of the arms, trunk and legs, as well as in chest and pelvic organs. This is called tetraplegia or quadriplegia. A lower injury might cause paraplegia, the loss of function in all or part of the legs and pelvic organs. The NSCISC also says the lifetime medical and living costs for a spinal cord injury with “incomplete motor function at any level” can be expected to be at least $1.09 million for a 50-year-old patient or more than $1.5 million for 25-year-old. A 50-year-old patient with high tetraplegia can expect lifetime costs of more than $2.5 million. A 25-year-old who suffers a high spinal cord injury causing tetraplegia will need at least $4.6 million for medical and living expenses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website states that at least 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, occur as a result of a singular injury or with other injuries each year. Traumatic brain injuries make up a large number of deaths and instances of permanent disability. Traumatic brain injury is an injury that disrupts the regular function of the brain and is caused by a jolt, bump, or blow to the head or some other penetrating head injury. Some blows or jolts are minor and result in a lower grade injury like a concussion, but others are much more severe and include a long period of unconsciousness or amnesia following the injury.
Motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, and “struck by/against” events are the leading causes of traumatic brain injury. Motor vehicle accidents are the second leading cause, and affect all age groups. “Struck by/against” events are when the injured collides with a moving or stationary object.
